Sailor Moon R Episode Changes
Episode 41 (47):
Additions:
-
Star Wars
style text before opening credits (not in other
episodes) – removed when re-aired
- Announcer explaining past episodes
- Aired on Fox
- Suggestions that the episode is a pilot
Cuts:
- A few seconds at the start where Artemis tries to cuddle with
Luna and gets a paw across the face
- Entire scene with Usagi at school – so after she's late to
school, she's suddenly home again
- "Sailor Says" segment
Changes:
- Much more inaccurate than most of the Earl/Ann dubs
- At the end, Usagi originally walked away saying "to the normal
Usagi, bye-bye..." but it was changed to a joke
- Changed the names Earl/ Seijuurou and Ann/ Natsumi to Alan and
Ann (removing alternate names for their civilian identities)
Goofs:
- Claim that Earl and Ann were sent by Queen Beryl
- 9th/ 10th grade goof (Usagi hasn't had her birthday yet and
Japanese schools
start in April)
Episode 42 (48):
Additions:
- Luna saying that Mamoru would be getting his memory back soon
Changes:
- Accurate; starts a long run of accurate ones
- TV station's Japanese sign replaced with a shot of the Tokyo
Tower
- When Molly (Naru) asked Serena (Usagi) to come with her in the
dub, she really told Usagi that since she has a lot of weird things
happen to her, that she was afraid it might be another
Episode 43 (49):
Additions:
- Dialogue between Earl and Ann about pretending to be brother
and sister at the high school
Cuts:
- Pool of blood scene (where Ken is knocked out) was shortened
Changes:
- Scene of Earl and Ann kissing (after added dialogue about pretending
to be brother and sister)
Goofs:
- Perpetuating the "high school" goof
Episode 44 (50):
Additions:
- Reference to Usagi not liking war games (probably)
Changes:
- Episode specific speech was different
- At the end of the show, Sailor Moon was wondering about her
tiara and Mamoru
Episode 45 (51):
Additions:
Cuts:
- Scene where Naru closes the sleeping bag with Umino inside as
a prank
- Scene where Usagi puts extra mustard on Rei's food and Rei runs
around screaming with fire coming from her mouth
- Apparently, the nude scene was a bit cut to remove a breast
shot – but there's still a breast shot in there
Changes:
- Accurate except for cuts and speech (who knows how the speech
got that way)
- The day wasn't part of their environmental studies
Episode 46 (52):
Changes:
- Mostly accurate except for speech
Consistencies:
- Kids were actually singing opening theme (which doesn't make
sense in the dub because the dub theme talks about Sailor Moon,
but the original version doesn't)
Episode 47 (53):
Changes:
- Scene with the baby peeing on Ann was changed to him throwing
up (but left in the Sailor Says)
- Whole Sailor Says was left out in the rerun in some areas
Episode 48 (54):
Cuts:
- Scene at the start with Minako and Makoto selling good luck
charms at the temple
Episode 49 (55):
Additions:
- Serena/Usagi's remark about Alan (Earl) looking like Lita/Mako's
old boyfriend
- Molly (Naru) asking Melvin (Umino) if he was showing her inchworms
- Melvin (Umino) making the food for an anniversary
- Voice-over "what's that guy got that we haven't got?"
- Lita (Mako) wondering why Ann was so jealous
- Lita (Mako) wanting to run a restaurant
Cuts:
- Scene where Usagi was late and forgot her lunch
- Reference of the Moonlight Knight reminding Mako of her old
boyfriend
- Joke where Ami asked Mako if Earl looked like her old boyfriend
– she said no, but they did both like music
- Censored the end of the Mako/ Ami scene, where Mako slaps Ami
hard before running off to share lunch with Earl
- Removal of Usagi's speech – mattered here, since in the original
she was interrupted before she got a chance to finish
Changes:
- Bad scripts start again. Some of it inevitable, since bento
boxes and lunch sharing are pretty Japanese culture specific.
- Mako asked Earl if he liked to wear Arabian clothes much earlier
– for some reason the line was moved
- Earl didn't say that love is supposed to be special (and have
Mako agree), he said that love has to be stolen by force (and
she disagreed). Of course, no way could the original line appear
on US and Canadian television.
- That wasn't squid. That was sausage cut to look like squid
- Mako/ Earl dialogue on the roof was completely different –
get a synopsis
- Haruna didn't ask Usagi to get her lunch, she was upset over
Usagi sleeping through classes (presumably out of hunger)
- Original joke at the end was Ann asking "what do I do with it?"
- It was not lunchtime when Usagi finally got her lunch
Goofs:
- Mis-dubbed Venus' attack name: it was really the "shower" version,
but they dubbed it as the first version instead
Episode 50 (56):
Cuts:
- First scene (Usagi late for school)
- Brief scene where Rei reads a wish that Mamoru wrote on a board
at the temple
Changes:
- Seems to be a "good" episode except for a few changes
- Earl said that they didn't need to study English, not read fairy
tales (though the book itself was still originally a Snow White
book)
- Mako's "talents" referred to her breast size (which is why Mamoru
becomes so nervous)
- Mars introduced herself as "Mars of the red heel"
- Venus' gesture was referring to her mask as Sailor V; not "V
for victory"
- One of the few cases where the Senshi actually said things in
the original that could be used (but weren't) to deduce their
secret identities
Consistencies:
- That was Snow White in the original
Episode 51 (57):
Additions:
- Reference to seeing a video. They were going to a movie instead
of doing real work.
- Usagi saying she was going to go home and do the assignment
in front of the TV
Cuts:
- Scene at the beginning in which the Senshi fight a cardian
- Reference to Usagi and Mamoru being tied by the red string of
destiny (and Ann/ Natsumi cutting it), a cultural reference
- When the cardian breaks out of the juku, you see a building
front with Japanese writing. This building was originally shown
at the start of that scene, too (dub replaced it with a generic
park view)
- When Sailor Moon jumped down to join the Senshi, the part of
the jump where she is shown coming out of the window was cut (probably
censored because kids might imitate it)
Changes:
- Not the good writer
- When Ann (Natsumi) was asked to read poetry, she was really
being asked to translate
- Earl originally blamed the Senshi for the lack of energy
- Haruna, on her date, realized she was forgetting something
- Original speech by the Senshi ended with: "in the name of Sailor
Moon, we will punish you!"
- When Ann (Natsumi) remarked about the Doom Tree growing stronger
when Serena (Usagi) was nice to her, the dialogue was nothing
like the original. Natsumi was actually remembering the fable
of the rabbit and the tortoise, where the rabbit is faster but
the tortoise manages to win. (note: rabbit = Usagi).
- Natsumi asked Usagi to rest for ten seconds to give her a chance
to catch up, not try mind reading
Consistencies:
- class
was
originally an English class
- Usagi did say she was going to find Mamoru
Goofs:
- No essays were involved; you can even see from what's visible
of the problems near the end that theyi had to answer questions,
not write essays
- Venus and Mercury used their powered up attacks; mistakenly
dubbed as their regular attacks
Episode 52 (58):
Additions:
- Reference to thousands of years (of getting energy) for the
tree
Cuts:
- Joke where Luna says that any show about Usagi must be a comedy
Changes:
- Doi's synopsis is wrong here – it was done from a book that
left out the first scene
- hard to tell who was the writer; probably the good one, but
it's much harder to tell than usual
- Serna/ Usagi's remark about Alan (Seijuurou) being a major hunk
was originally her saying that Seijuurou and Natsumi didn't have
other friends
- It wasn't hot chocolate, it was tea – both times
- Usagi's remark when she looked into the tree's room was on the
order of "if people tell me not to look, I want to see it more",
not anything about curiosity killing the cat (but it's close)
Goofs:
- tries to pretend the "Negaverse" is involved with the tree and
lied to them. This isn't true. For starters, the Dark Kingdom
chapter is completely separate from the Earl and Ann chapter –
they are not connected in any way.
Episode 53 (59):
Changes:
- When Earl kicked Mamoru and Usagi's hands apart, he said, "I
won't let you touch my Usagi-san." That's why Ann was angry with
him, and she said nothing about him lying to her.
- Senshi lines about not knowing friendship was really telling
Earl and Ann that love is not something you take
- When the Moonlight Knight appeared, he said nothing about the
situation looking bad, nor did he say to Ann that she can't bear
that Mamoru dumped her (they never dated!). He said that all people
on Earth are brothers, and that Ann should look into her heart
before fighting.
- Ann's dub line was "...I'll show you what this misfit can do!"
But she actually said that anyone on Earth couldn't understand
the pain felt by herself and Earl.
- We learn the Moonlight Knight's story, and it's accurate, except
that he was created by the Ginzuishou, not a part of Mamoru that
wanted to protect Usagi
- Doom Tree's story was accurate, except that the beings born
from it were not created on purpose
Episode 54 (60):
Cuts:
- Apparently, a scene where ChibiUsa shoots Usagi with a toy gun
(censorship for kids) (partial cut)
Changes:
- At the beginning, that was just a big, long, kiss. There was
no dialogue about caramel bubble gum.
- Edited a bath scene to cover Usagi's cleavage – coloured and
water level raised
- Rei's grandfather wasn't saying anything about milk in his tea
(Japanese tea is not drunk with milk); he was making passes at
the girls
- When Serena (Usagi) asked "And since when do we have a cousin
named Rini (ChibiUsa)?", she really said that ChibiUsa wasn't
human
Episode 55 (61):
Cuts:
- Shortened scene at the beginning in which Usagi hugs Mamoru
and Luna tells her to look for ChibiUsa
Changes:
- Apparently the 'good' writer
- No mention is made of Mamoru's age – it seems that Usagi's
father is upset because Usagi is growing up and is old enough
to have a boyfriend
- Sign on the cosmetics shop, and the papers, had the language
changed (they originally said "Elegance Shop Otafukuya". The old
name was kept inside the shop; only the outside was changed.
- "Love and justice" was kept, but "in the name of the moon, I'll
punish you" was removed again
Goofs:
- "Crystal nucleus" is really a crystal point. According to Hitoshi
Doi's synopses, there are six episodes with crystal points (originally
61-3, 65, 66, 71). There are ten points on the star, 5 inside
and 5 on the tips. Apparently whoever rewrote the dub scripts
was unaware of this and concluded that the sixth point has to
be in the center.
Episode 56 (62):
Additions:
- Reference to Queen Beryl
- Seat belt painted on Amy (Ami) in the dub
- Ending joke
Changes:
- Not even close
- New items were not 10 times as powerful as the old ones (they
weren't doing ten times better)
- Ami asked ChibiUsa where she was really from; replaced in the
dub with "I always study best at night."
- Usagi did not say the party was her excuse for buying a dress
- According to Doi's synopsis, Ami had to leave in 10 days, not
2 weeks
Goofs:
- Said that the episode's crystal point was the first one (wrong,
see notes for last episode)
Episode 57 (63):
Cuts:
- A scene where Usagi spanks ChibiUsa
Changes:
- First scene did not have Rei's grandfather get an expensive
2 page ad by mistake. The magazine really had an article warning
about a perverted old man at the Hikawa Shrine.
- Rei was arguing with her grandfather because he likes to fool
around with girls, not because she was afraid he'd get a heart
attack
- Rei was jealous over Yuuichirou bringing in lots of girls who
liked him, not over her grandfather liking him
- "Wait, I'm the coach" said by Yuuichirou became "No one has
to fight"
- Usagi's speech seemed exceptionally redundant (In the original,
she scolded the enemy for destroying the fun of an old man who
was a little lecherous)
- Usagi didn't thank Tuxedo Mask, she said maybe she'll join the
gymnastics class
- Sailor Mars didn't thank Sailor Moon, she made a comment that
Tuxedo Mask still cared for Sailor Moon
- Sailor Moon's transformation command became "Moon Star Power"
Consistencies:
- Ami did make a comment about doing her homework
Episode 58 (64):
Cuts:
- Scene of Usagi jumping up and screaming at the lightning (left
in preview)
Changes:
- Back to "Moon Crystal Power" and "punish you!", but the rest
of the episode wasn't even close
- Ami didn't say Usagi and Mamoru were crazy to be out in the
storm. She said was that if they have enough time to be running
around in the rain, they should study.
- Seems very unlikely that there were any karma references in
the original
- Mentioned at the beginning of the episode that the kid, not
Princess Serenity, was scared of lightning
Consistencies:
- Usagi was scared by lightning
Goofs:
- Voice in the Luna ball was messed up. It's not supposed to be
Luna; ChibiUsa wasn't talking to the ball, but to a person (to
be revealed later)
Episode 59 (65):
Cuts:
- Line about ChibiUsa wanting to marry Mamoru
- Sign on the store was there in the original, but there was another
sign in front which had more Japanese in it. A shot of the second
sign was replaced with the first.
- A bit of the scene at the end – when Usagi drinks the good
luck potion, she spits it out at Rei
Changes:
- Half of the first Black Moon scene was moved to closer to the
beginning of the episode
- A lot of dialouge changed ('bad' writer episode)
- Usagi wasn't supposed to drink the good luck potion in doses.
Drinking it all at once was the recommended method (but it still
doesn't work so well).
- Girls weren't arguing over getting the "forgiveness" stone to
forgive each other; they wanted it for boyfriend help but were
trying to pretend they didn't have any boyfriend trouble
- Where Prisma (Petz) said to get out of the store, she really
said "love is worthless"
- In general, references to love and or men were changed in this
episode
Goofs:
- Minako did not call Mako "Jupiter" while in civilian ID
Episode 60 (66):
Cuts:
- Line "didn't your boyfriend dump you?", said by Avery (Calaveras)
to Prisma (Petz) – that's what made her drop the cake
- Scene with the girls at home trying to cook. (Obviously because
kids would learn to cut vegetables dangerously) – left in in
the Sailor Says (Minako cuts her finger, and it looks like Mako
is trying to find the end of it in the chopped carrots)
- Joke where Tuxedo Mask's speech was the same as Sailor Moon's
Changes:
- Better writer this time
- Black Moon scene originally appeared much later in the episode
- "...Punish you!" was there for once, but mistimed
Consistencies:
- In general, references to love and or men
Goofs:
- The ingredient Usagi forgot was not curry, it was meat
- It wasn't chicken curry, it was beef, and when you see Rei's
thoughts about using instant curry, it says "beef" right on the
packet – in English
(Episode 67):
Reason:
- unnecessary
- no objectionable content
- not part of the main plot
Synopsis:
- Senshi and ChibiUsa go to an island on summer break
- Only monsters are a dinosaur and a cute baby dinosaur, and they're
friendly
- Senshi have to stop a volcanic eruption
- Very cute
Episode 61 (68):
Additions:
- Rini (ChibiUsa) saying that her mother can't be Serena (Usagi)
- Villains claim they could take Rini (ChibiUsa) home
- Serena (Usagi) saying Rini (ChibiUsa) must be a princess
Cuts:
- A scene where Usagi is accused of wetting her bed; but ChibiUsa
did it. The later dialog was also changed to not refer to it.
Changes:
- Not by the 'good' writer, despite "punish you!"
- Script available in Hitoshi Doi's page – you can use it and
easily see how much was changed
- Usagi was going to go shopping, but had planned it and wasn't
out of money
- When the injured Luna appeared to the others, she told them
where to find ChibiUsa
- ChibiUsa only needed the crystal, she didn't need to find her
mother for her to go back home
- Scene with Wiseman saying ChibiUsa is Usagi's daughter was
not so obvious in the original
Goofs:
- Didn't use Luna ball as a communicator (but at least it wasn't
Luna's voice this time)
- Entire plot about Serena (Usagi) not caring for Rini (ChibiUsa)
was completely a dub invention. When we are shown at the end that
she does care for her, Usagi is still in costume – and ChibiUsa
doesn't know Usagi's Sailor Moon, so if this plot was real, ChibiUsa
would never know Usagi changed her mind.
Episode 62 (69):
Cuts:
- A scene where Rei slaps Usagi (left in preview)
Changes:
- Mostly accurate
- Tuxedo Mask's line at the end about roses was originally stating
that they were no longer bound by the string of destiny
Episode 63 (70):
Additions:
- Catsy (Cooan) making the remark about ruling the universe
Cuts:
- A scene where Yuuichirou tried to sell various items to Cooan
– she eventually got a fortune from him, with large Japanese
writing on it
- When Artemis says that the girls are stuck with the cats because
they don't have boyfriends, a bit was cut where Minako hits Artemis
in the nose with her finger, hard
Changes:
- Not accurate
- Usagi was saying she's reading comics because she can't read
them with ChibiUsa and Luna around, not because she'd be tired
bringing them home
- Important: In the conversation with Rei, Cooan, and Usagi; Rei
did not blame Usagi for the breakup, and needless to say, nobody
said that she should apologize.
- ChibiUsa did not read Rei's comics
- Half the references to love were watered down (though, they
are sickeningly sweet for a Canadian/ US audience) – e.g. "your
heart's good, I believe in you" originally said that since Cooan
knows love, she can be a friend.
Episode 64 (71):
Additions:
- Reference to a wing clipped
- Frame around the hug scene near the end
Cuts:
- Part of the chess scene at the start, where ChibiUsa plays chess
with Usagi and wins
- Dialogue where Beruche says "I hate nice people like you."
- Beruche saying that fighting 3 against 1 isn't fair
Changes:
- Not too bad
- Usagi's speech was a different cheesy speech in the original,
and did use "punish you" then. (At least they're keeping cheesy
speeches now, even if they do invent new ones)
Episode 65 (72):
Additions:
- Synopsis contains no reference to the sisters' old selves being
good before they worked with Rubeus – it can't be proved this
wasn't in the original, but it sounds unlikely.
- Rubeus saying the sisters were badly dressed
Changes:
- Hard to say whether this one got the good or bad writer
- Those were sweet potatoes, not weight gain bars
- Two remaining sisters' mission was not to change the other two
back, but to get information from them (who the Senshi are and
where ChibiUsa is). It should be obvious that Rubeus didn't want
to change them back as he rejected them in previous episodes.
- At the end, Rubeus originally learned Sailor Moon had the crystal
Consistencies:
- They did say in the original that the stick must be influencing
Calaveras
Episode 66 (73):
Cuts:
- Scene where Usagi nearly slaps ChibiUsa (Some of the footage
appeared in teaser for next episode)
- Some flashbacks to earlier episodes
- ChibiUsa's flashback to Crystal Tokyo (partial)
Episode 67 (74):
Cuts:
- All scenes showing the Senshi being held on crosses; so they
just appear out of nowhere when Rubeus is defeated
Changes:
- UFO blew up because ChibiUsa removed a power crystal, not because
of a self-destruct device
- (Paul Cumming also sent K. Arromdee a list which is apparently
too long to include)
Goofs:
- Continuity goof where Sailor Moon calls ChibiUsa "Rini" while
trying to pretend she's "Trini". The new name was necessary in
the first place because the villains know ChibiUsa's name instead
of calling her "the rabbit"
Episode 68 (75):
Episode 69 (76):
Episode 70 (77):
Changes:
- Love bracelets were promise rings
- Promise rings were energy rings
Episode 71 (78):
Cuts:
- Opening sequence about the flu spreading through the city
- Some of the jokes with Minako messing up popular sayings
Changes:
- Changed from Christmas to Mamoru's birthday
- Serana/ Usagi's dream sequence was changed to not talk about
the Mamoru/ Usagi age difference
- When Venus is pinned to the wall with huge syringes by the monster,
her original line "Damn!" was changed to "Not good!"
Episode 42 (48):
Cuts:
- First scene where people are looking at Esmeraude. She thinks
they're envious, but soon realizes a dog is peeing on her boot.
Then she chases the dog into the petting zoo.
Changes:
- Called the petting zoo an animal shelter
- Monster of the episode was originally called Dogma
Consistencies:
- At the end, they show the same dog urinating on Esmeraude's
boot (and her getting mad and chasing it again)
Episode 73 (80):
Cuts:
- Scenes with Esmeraude relaxing in her bath. In one of them,
Saphir comes in, and Esmeraude says there is only one man
who is allowed to see her in the bath (implying that it's Demand).
He then tells her that she should finish her mission and not waste
time in her bath, but she brushes him off.
- A scene where Mercury attempts to use the Shine Aqua Illusion
on her friends before they leapt out the window
Changes:
- Monster of the episode was teasing Sailor Moon in various ways.
She said that Sailor Moon was stupid, flat chested (that's why
she covers her chest), etc. She didn't just keep calling her stupid.
Episode 74 (81):
Cuts:
- Flashback of ChibiUsa's first day at school, at the beginning
Changes:
- Melissa was known as Momo
Goofs:
- The twin droids, Doom and Gloom, were known as Chiral and Achiral
in the original. The "Doom and Gloom" name was already
used in a past dubbed episode – the "Doom and Gloom girls"
Beryl sent to deal with the Senshi at the end of the Dark Kingdom
story arc.
Episode 75 (82):
Goofs:
- When ChibiUsa sees the fake Neo-Queen, she called ChibiUsa "Small
Lady" but ChibiUsa said she would never call her Small Lady. In
the original, ChibiUsa was to be called Small Lady. Neo-Queen
Serenity called her the rabbit. That's when ChibiUsa knew she
was a fake.
Episode 76 (83):
Cuts:
- When Demand touches Usagi's shoulder and she shoves it off.
Episode 77 (84):
Changes:
- Wiseman told her (?) that she was a fool for thinking Esmeraude
could control the Dark crystal, just before Esmeraude turned into
a dragon and said, "I would give my soul for Demand."
Episode 78 (85):
Cuts:
- When the moon was shown, in the 20th century Tokyo, they cut
out the ChibiUsa image
- A scene where ChibiUsa slips and falls in the rain
- Parts of the nude scene with Wicked/ Black Lady
Changes:
- Tuxedo Mask said "A pretty flower will die when poisoned" not
"Be careful what you wish for"
Episode 79 (86):
Changes:
- The Doom Phantom was originally called the Death Phantom
- Saphir stole a crystal key card, not a control chip
Episode 80 (87):
Cuts:
- When Luna and Artemis ask the senshi to be careful
- Graphic blood scene on Demand's chest when he protected Sailor
Moon from the Wiseman's attack
- When Black Lady kisses Tuxedo Mask
Changes:
- Ami was talking about crumb cake, not cheese cake.
- Here's what the senshi said before transforming:
Makoto:
Keep the peace and eat the cake.
Minako:
For our future.
Ami:
For ChibiUsa and the people of Crystal Tokyo.
Rei:
Our minds united.
Usagi:
We'll protect this Earth we love.
Episode 81 (88):
Changes:
- Black Lady said nothing about blasting Tuxedo Mask first. She
actually said that she would kill them all, starting with Sailor
Moon. Tuxedo Mask threw himself in front of Sailor Moon and took
the blast. Black Lady couldn't understand why he would risk
his life for another person.
- Black Lady also said she wouldn't be deceived, not just "I'm
all alone" a few times
- Before ChibiUsa went home, Minako reminded her not to wet the
bed and she promised she wouldn't
Goofs:
- Venus forgot to say "Neo" in Neo-Queen Serenity's name
Episode 82 (89):
Additions:
- Saying Professor Tomoe looked like Umino
Cuts:
